Greetings: My name is Jim Thrash and I’m the Chaplain for the Karnes County Civil Detention Center in Karnes City, TX. I’m also a Southern Baptist minister endorsed by NAMB of the SBC. Although most of my life has been as a Baptist pastor, this is my first opportunity to serve as a chaplain. KCCDC is a brand new facility. You might have heard of us on the radio or TV. We have a capacity for 608 Residents, although our present number is much less than capacity. Our Residents are all Level One, which means they have no criminal or violent background. They are merely awaiting adjudication of their immigration status. Some of them will be allowed to stay in the USA and some of them will be sent back to their country of record. All in all, it is a very calm, safe, and pleasant environment. Probably 98% of our Residents speak Spanish as their primary language and only a very few speak English well as a second language. Therefore, it is essential that communication with them be in Spanish. That is why we are requesting Volunteers from local churches to minister to them. We try and have some kind of worship/study experience every day. At present, we try and have Catholic worship services on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and General Protestant Worship services on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Whenever possible, we try and have all our services at 3:00 PM. If you or any of your leaders are interested we would love to have you serve as a Volunteer. You can preach, conduct worship services, teach the Bible, sing, conduct Prayer Services, or just about anything you would like. Just let me know and I will work with you in any way I can. All Volunteers must be trained and must pass a Criminal Background Check. If you will contact me I will be happy to discuss the details with you more fully.
